Die Bedrohung der Tiere, Pflanzen und Pilze der Alpen durch Klimawandel und Nutzungsdruck war noch nie so groß wie heute. Unsere bisherigen Schutzbemühungen sind unzureichend, wie die zahlreichen Roten Listen dokumentieren. Zudem stellen die Alpen einen besonderen Biodiversitäts-Hotspot dar, weshalb es im gesamteuropäischen öffentlichen Interesse ist, diese herausragende Vielfalt auch für die Zukunft zu erhalten.
